Geek In Training
It is a big pet peeve of us, older geeks, that the new generation of geeks is DOIN’ITWRONG! Last week, I was having a conversation with one of my Freshman students who, by all accounts, is a fellow geek. The topic of our favorite movies came up, and I mentioned a couple of my own, like Last Crusade, The Maltese Falcon and The Return of the Jedi. With a glint of glee in his eye, this student tells me, unflinchingly, that his favorite movie is Episode I. As in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. I was left speechless.
This kid, a fellow Xbox Liver, with whom I had just had a lively discussion about Sandman: Season of Mists, had told me that his favorite movie of all time was freaking Episode One.
Yippee.
And this is not the only time my jaw has dropped. Every time one of my geek students professes love for Naruto (GAK!), or Twilight (AAAGH!) my soul dies a little and I am horrified about the future of humanity.
I can but play my Red Dwarf DVDs and cry myself to sleep.

By the Way(Force), I just want to death choke someone when they make mention of Darth Maul or someone from the new triology being cool or bad ass. NO ONE CAN TOP THE VADER, NO ONE. ANd don’t get me started on Narutards. (I confess that whilst being bored I do watch it, but its not the only thing I breath). Oh and the D&D 4ed , new gen geeks it’s so cool, really??? Just cuz yer books are shinier and cost a set of new eyes, nothing beats 2nd ed AD&D! If geek is cheek now, I’m something else, cuz I’m really not their kind of geek! Well, guess they are just posers, or lamers.
