All Hands To Battle Stations
I’ve fallen in love with Star Trek Online. I haven’t had so much fun with a MMO since my days as a dirty WoW N00b. Yet, I am incredibly saddened by the fact that my two best friends in the world aren’t in there, kicking cold Gorn butt, with me. German isn’t a big MMO fan and Rick, well, Rick was sucked in by Mass Effect 2.
We haven’t heard from him in days.
It’s this love for old school RPG experiences, of the sort that you have to deal with putting in long hours of gameplay, making long term choices and plans, and watching your character, and you, grow with time, that this comic is all about. It seems that the younger generation much prefers to snipe goons on FPS than spend hours on a labor of love that is a good RPG.
I’ve spent hours explaining to David, my teaching assistant and the real world inspiration for Dave, the intricacies of this sort of gameplay to no avail. He just doesn’t get it. Meanwhile, I fail to see the allure of spending hours running around in a virtual world like a headless chicken with an uzi shooting players you’ll never even have a single conversation with. It’s much more satisfying to take out one of your dear friends instead of a total stranger, isn’t it?
Or is it just me?
Cheers!
Pete

I think a person’s taste in video games is heavily influenced by their perception of them as either a hobby or a distraction. “Casual” gamers stick with the action, sports, and shooter genres because they are generally easy to learn, don’t require much of a time investment, and player skill relies on reflexes more than anything else. “Hardcore” gamers enjoy games from the RPG, adventure, strategy, and simulator genres because they are willing to invest a bit more time and effort on a game in pursuit of greater rewards that can only be obtained through patience and careful thought.
It’s pretty much the same as the difference between people who can only tolerate Hollywood cinema and those who can also stand to watch independent film.

Wait for it… HA! Old Republic… hm… nope… what happened to plain old RPG, does everything these days has to be “fonckline”? Darn it, KOTOR 1 and 2 were great, but the next installment is online, then we have all those Bethesda made Star Trek games that came out for the PS2, I have em all btw, now the best and most complete one gets the “fockline” orgytreat. Played the beta, so so, I’ll wait till it goes free play, like Dungeons and Dragons Online, that one is a bit more entertaining, its free and has DRAGONS!
In any case, I liked the bit of bringing Peace to the Galaxy…
